Natalie Portman, Serena Williams And More Are Bringing Woman's Soccer To LA

2020 Women's ASB Classic: Day 7

Well finally some good news this week for the city of Los Angeles!

Actress Natalie Portman, tennis star Serena Williams and her daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian are part of a majority woman-founded group that will own the newest soccer team in the United States. Actresses Jessica Chastain and Eva Longoria, and soccer legend Mia Hamm are also part of the founding group.

The National Women's Soccer League announced that it has awarded the “Angel City” group the franchise for a new Los Angeles team, which will join the league in the spring of 2022.

I love that this ownership group of women are coming at this from a whole different perspective than most team owners!

The team's founder and president, Julie Uhrman, said that the organization will work with local communities AND support the Play Equity Fund, an organization committed to making sure kids across Los Angeles have access and opportunity to experience "transformational power of sport."

Reflecting that, Natalie Portman said: “Success to us isn’t only on the field, but our impact in our community, payback to our players, and entertainment of the world. We are not a legacy team but a team of activists, athletes, and entrepreneurs who are used to challenging the status quo and reshaping expectations.”

I am SO here for this outlook from owners of a professional sports team. I really feel like this could be a huge pivot in how sports teams function in the future.

One other thing I love so much about the team's founding group? At just 2 years old, Serena Williams daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian is a co-owner of "Angel City”, making her the youngest owner in pro sports.

It seems crazy to me that we don't have a professional women's soccer team in LA... but that's all about to change. Hopefully by the time the women start playing games, we will be out of the woods with the coronavirus pandemic and we will be able to actually go into the stadium and celebrate this new beginning for LA!
