'Hot Wheels,' The Most Stolen Cars Of 2016

When parking your car on the street there’s always a little worry that someone may try to steal it, and if you own certain vehicles you have a particularly good reason to be concerned.  The National Insurance Crime Bureau just released their annual "Hot Wheels" reports, identifying the ten most stolen vehicles in the country, and it turns out, if you have a newer model car you can rest a little easier.

Overall, Honda Accords and Civics make up a good portion of the list, but they aren’t the newer models. It seems older, pre-“smart key” cars are more likely to get stolen simply because it’s easier and they lack anti-theft technology. In fact, of the 2016 Accords, there were only 493 thefts last year, which is a huge decrease from previous years.

As for the "Hot Wheels" report, last year’s most stolen vehicle of 2016 was actually a 1997 Honda Accord, with 7,527 reported thefts, with the 1998 Honda Civic coming in second with 7,478 thefts.

Top Ten Most Stolen Vehicles Last Year

  1. Honda Accord, 1997 (7,527)
  2. Honda Civic, 1998 (7,578)
  3. Ford Pick-Up (Full Size), 2006 (2,986)
  4. Chevrolet Pick-Up (Full Size), 2004 (2,107)

  8. Toyota Corolla, 2015 (1,070)
  9. Chevrolet Impala 2008 (1,013)
  10. Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee, 2000 (898)
