You’re probably aware that Earth has a plastics problem, and it’s pretty bad. We’re talking about 18 billion pounds of plastic getting dumped into our oceans every year, which is not helping our marine ecosystems. But while most of us are part of the problem because we add to the plastic waste, now we can be part of the efforts to fix the issue and it’s as easy as buying a swimsuit.
Madewell has come out with its first ever sustainable swimwear line and it’s made of 32 bathing suit styles for women and they’re all made from recycled plastic bottles. The swimsuits come in fun prints and classic solids, and all of them are $100 or less. And you can feel good wearing it because it’s keeping plastic out of the ocean.
A one-piece suit is made with about eight plastic bottles and the bikinis are equal to about four. The entire “Second Wave” collection has kept over 50,000 (50,920) bottles from ending up in landfills or oceans. If you’ve got to buy a bathing suit anyway, at least you can help the planet while you’re at it.
